The organization's main thrust is to address the causes of problems facing the community consequently to attain results, in order to stop recycling poverty that will either prolong poor conditions or create dependence.
The operating principles of the National Black United Fund, the chapters and affiliates are: Self-Help, Mutual Aid and Volunteerism.
The National office is located in, New York , Los Angeles, Pennsylvania ,Arkansas , Central Florida, Missouri, and Kansas.
The other affiliates are in these cities and states: Oakland-Bay Area, Sacramento Valley , Hampton Roads Virginia, Arizona ,Denver , Ohio , Georgia , New Jersey , Michigan , Maryland , Massachusetts , Illinois, Tennessee and Texas .
